The Estate: House, Location & Region

Casa Cimeira, in the village of Valença do Douro, is a property listed as being of municipal heritage value. It is one of the last remaining examples of traditional rural bourgeois architecture from the Douro region, located in the municipality of Tabuaço, on the south bank of the Douro River facing Pinhão.

Casa Cimeira was built in 1814, during the vine-planting works of Quinta da Corte and Quinta do Panascal (Lower and Upper), and was later extended in 1831. Its original architecture was based on a rectangular layout spread over 3 floors.

The house’s day-to-day running is led by Maria da Luz; themed walks through the surrounding valleys (Fraga da Moura, Mata da Moita, Távora River, Tua River and Ferradosa) and villages (Pinhão, Trevões, S. Salvador do Mundo) are led by her sons, Paulo and Miguel.

Rooms and Common Areas

The house offers 6 double rooms and 1 suite for guest use, all with full private bathrooms and air conditioning, providing comfort within a space that celebrates the original Douro architecture.

Around the courtyard connecting to the storeroom/wine press/cellar, there is a building with a porch for breakfasts or dinners on warm summer evenings, an indoor room with a fireplace and table games, and a separate room for children’s activities.

At the entrance to the cellar, a platform holds a small panoramic pool overlooking the Douro, supported by schist walls and flanked by two cherry trees for shade or for tasting seasonal fresh fruit.

Casa Cimeira lies close to the Douro River. A masterpiece of nature and human endeavour, the Douro Valley is above all river, vineyard, breathtaking landscape and centuries of history. Successive waves of peoples, cultures and beliefs have settled this hot, dry region, nestled at the foot of the Marão and Montemuro mountain ranges.

Across this intricate landscape they left behind rock art, hillforts, menhirs and dolmens, and built causeways, Roman bridges, medieval castles, monasteries and churches of every style and period.
